Ladder Toss Rules, Distance and Scoring

How to set up and score ladder toss (ladder golf): ladder distance, bola throws, rung points, exact-21 scoring and what to look for in a set.

Quick answer

Ladder toss uses two ladders with three rungs and bolas, two balls joined by a cord. Ladders are commonly set about 15 feet apart. A bola wrapped on the top rung scores 3 points, the middle 2 and the bottom 1. Players usually throw three bolas a turn, and the first to reach exactly 21 points wins; going over sends you back. Sturdy sets have weighted or stakeable bases and bolas with strong cord.

Ladder toss is easy to set up and works for all ages. Rules vary a little between families, so agree before the first throw.

Setup

Item Common standard
Ladders Three rungs, about a foot apart
Distance About 15 ft between ladders
Bolas per player 3
Game target Exactly 21 points

Scoring

Rung Points
Top 3
Middle 2
Bottom 1

Bolas knocked off by an opponent do not score. Common bonuses include extra points for three bolas on one rung or one on each rung.

Playing

Players or teams alternate throwing all their bolas from beside their ladder. Bolas can be thrown any way, but underhand is most common. Score at the end of each round.

What to look for in a set

  • PVC or wood ladders that do not sway.
  • Bases that can be weighted or staked.
  • Bolas with golf-ball-weight balls and cord that will not fray.
  • A carry bag for transport.
